Executive of the Year
honored by the American Horse Council, who represent all
breeds of horses in the nation’s capital, with their acclaimed Van
Ness Award in Washington D.C. in June.
He was presented the Van Ness Award for his outstanding contri-
butions to numerous state horse industries over the years including
those in California, Washington, Arizona and particularly Florida.
“I’d also like to emphasize that it takes a team and then some
to get things done and make good things happen,” Powell con-
tinued. Accordingly, I must share this award with all of our
amazing staff and management in Ocala as well as advisors in
Tallahassee. Combine them with a consistently engaged board
and officer team as well as members, friends and supporters and
that’s how someone like myself gets such awesome, flattering
and humbling accolades.
“It also helps when you represent such magnificent, heritage
steeped and accomplished Florida-bred thoroughbred industry
that annually contributes billions of dollars in state economic
impact while being strategically headquartered in the Horse
Capital of the World®.
“I greatly appreciate being recognized by FSAE for my lead-
ership, executive management, advocacy, promotional, public
relations, strategic, communications and subject mastery abili-
ties long demonstrated.
Powell served eight consecutive years as an FSAE board mem-
ber and past chair prior to concluding his term of office at the con-
ference. He has been elected by the FSAE board to every officer
position including secretary, chair elect, treasurer and ultimately
chair in 2021. He is the first person from Marion County or the
agriculture and equine industries to either serve on the FSAE board,
be elected chairman or be named the FSAE Executive of the Year.
Powell and his FTBOA team were also recognized in 2015 by
the FSAE as their Association of the Year, just months before being
recognized similarly by the Ocala Metro Chamber and Economic
Partnership that same year.
“Wow! Two prestigious awards in one year. Congratulations,
FTBOA president Valerie Dailey said. “It’s very nice to see Lonny
receiving these awards for his dedication and hard work in the or-
ganizations he serves. It’s well deserved.
“For the past several years, Lonny has been an integral part of
guiding the success of FSAE as Chair and Board Member,” FSAE
president and CEO Frank Rudd said. “Our award winners set the
standard for excellence in the association community, and Lonny’s
leadership in FSAE and his success in FTBOA led to our highest
recognition for his achievements.
“Lonny’s service to FSAE has been exemplary,FSAE chair-
elect Marsha Kiner said. “He served on the board in numerous ca-
pacities, led important committees, and has been a significant
contributor to the major decisions impacting the organization for
the last ten years. His leadership in 2020 during the onset of Covid-
19 was exceptional. He is a phenomenal human being and he is
most deserving of this high honor.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, NYStonestreet Stables dual Grade 1-win-
ner Clairiere came home the best of four to once again defeat her
familiar opponent, reigning champion 3-year-old filly Malathaat,
in a thrilling edition of the $200,000 Shuvee (Grade 2) on Sunday
at Saratoga Race Course.
The Shuvee marked the sixth renewal of an exciting rivalry
between the two Stonestreet-bred fillies, and their first meeting
since Clairiere defeated the accomplished Malathaat for the first
time in the Grade 1 Ogden Phipps on June 11 at Belmont Park
for Hall of Fame trainer Steve Asmussen. Clairiere eked out the
victory by a head in their last matchup, but came home a clear
length-and-a-half winner this time in the nine-furlong test for
older fillies and mares.
Clairiere, sent from post four as the second choice in the wa-
gering under Joel Rosario, broke sharply while longshot Exotic
West charged up from the inside post to take command of the com-
pact field of four through an opening quarter-mile in :24.75 over
the fast main track.
Crazy Beautiful tracked in second to the outside of Exotic West
with Malathaat, who sported blinkers for the first time, sitting in
third to the outside of Clairiere. The tightly bunched quartet’s po-
sitions remained unchanged through a half-mile in :49.45 before
Crazy Beautiful made her move to the outside of Exotic West and
led the charge heading into the final turn.
Hall of Fame rider John Velazquez gave Malathaat her cue from
third as Clairiere split rivals and was full of run with nowhere to
go, running up on the heels of Crazy Beautiful in the turn and
steadying before finding room on the rail and digging in for the
drive to the wire. Malathaat menaced down the center of the race-
track as the two put away Crazy Beautiful at the eighth pole, but it
was Clairiere that prevailed over an all-out Malathaat to complete
the nine furlongs in 1:51.96.
Rosario, who has piloted Clairiere in her last three outings, said
the daughter of Curlin was game to the wire.
“She broke really well. There wasn’t a lot of room between the
three-eighths and the quarter-pole and I just had to be there because
they were going really slow,Rosario said. “She responded really
well when I asked her.
“She was there for me,” added Rosario. “I was always looking
to see where there was room to go and it looked like it opened up
inside, and I just had to go with that. She did great.
Asmussen, who also trained Clairiere’s Hall of Fame sire, said
the 4-year-old filly continues to show her class.
“I think that it’s more proof of who she is,Asmussen said.
“She’s a great filly and what a great race. Moderate frac-
tions, they came home in good time and she’s just a very
fast mare right now.
The Shuvee was the third race off a four-month
layoff for Clairiere, who posted a good sophomore
campaign where she scored her first Grade 1 victory
in the Cotillion at Parx Racing and finished fourth in
both the Grade 1 Longines Kentucky Oaks in May
and the Grade 1 Longines Breeders’ Cup Distaff in
November at Del Mar.
The Saratoga winners circle eluded Clairiere last
year as she posted game on-the-board efforts in Grade 1
company, finishing behind Malathaat in both the Coach-
ing Club American Oaks and Alabama. Asmussen said
the Shuvee was a prep for another try at a Saratoga
Grade 1 in the $600,000 Personal Ensign on Aug. 27.
“The Personal Ensign was the reason to be here,As-
mussen said. “She ran two solid races last year at
Saratoga and we expect better this year.
Clairiere, out of the multiple Grade 1-winning mare
Cavorting, scored the fourth graded victory of her career
in the Shuvee. She banked $110,000 for her victory, in-
creasing her total purse earnings to $1,909,592 with a
record of six wins, four seconds and two thirds in 14 starts.
She returned $5 for a $2 win wager.
Hall of Fame trainer Todd Pletcher said Malathaat, winner of
the 2021 Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks, was not her usual self in the pad-
dock or on the racetrack.
“I was very concerned leaving the paddock,” said Pletcher. “She
came in super quiet. I don’t know if she reacted adversely to the
heat. She’s normally a very classy mare and not really animated,
but she was dull. She seemed to stay dull on the post parade and
for a horse adding first time blinkers, she was just a very dull per-
formance all the way around. I’ve never seen her that quiet in the
paddock before.
Live racing continues Wednesday at Saratoga with a 10-race
card, featuring the $200,000 Honorable Miss Handicap (G2) for
older fillies and mares sprinting six furlongs in Race 4. First post
is 1:05 p.m. EDT.

BY DEL MAR PRESS OFFICE__________________________
DEL MAR, CA—Rider Ramon Vazquez sat second to odds-on race
favorite Tizamagician in the 12-furlong Cougar II (Grade 3) Sunday
at Del Mar, then surged late and held off his classy rival for a one-
length tally with Hronis Racing’s Hey-
woods Beach.
The 5-year-old horse—ironically
by sprint champion Speightstown—
ran the mile-and-a-half in 2:30.09.
He is trained by veteran John Sadler,
who was winning the Cougar II for
the fourth time. It was also Sadler’s
83 stakes win at Del Mar, second-
most among all trainers.
Tizamagician
, who won the Cougar
II in 2020, set the early pace in the
Cougar II while leading by a half-length
ahead of
Heywoods Beach in second through quarter-mile splits of
:24.98, :49.12 and 1:13.45.
Heywoods Beach ranged up to challenge Tizamagician with a quar-
ter-mile to run and held off his challenger to finish in 2:30.39. Running
third, a neck farther back, was Jay Em Ess Stables Extra Hope followed
by Order and Law, Dicey Mo (GB) and Dean Martini
.
“I had a lot of horse all the way. I could feel it,” Vazquez said.
“You love it when you know you’ve got that under you. I could feel
it all the way. I like riding these long races. There’s time to think
and plan. You’ve got time to do what you need to do.
Sadler said after the race that he was happy that Vazquez exe-
cuted a smart strategy in the Cougar II.
“I told Ramon the two Mandell horses are tactical like us, just
gonna have to have a jocks’ ride,Sadler said. “We just laid second
off of him and we won. It’s a great race; I’ve won this race several
times (four) and I’ve always enjoyed it and its a fun race. I’m grate-
ful we have horses for it most years.
Heywoods Beach picked up a check for $75,000 for his work,
increasing his lifetime bankroll to $289,251. He’s won four of 18
outings and ran third in this same race last year when Tizamagician
was the winner.
Heywoods Beach paid $8.20 to win.
Vazquez, who has taken up residence at Del Mar for the first
time this summer, has one other stakes win at seaside track. That
came last Nov. 6 on the Breeders’ Cup undercard when he steered
the classy router Lone Rock to a victory in the TAA Stakes
marathon, besting Tizamagician in the process.
Heywoods Beach is out of Unfold the Rose, by Catienus and has
now won four of 18 career starts with two seconds and three thirds and
earnings of $289,251. At the 2019 Ocala Breeders’ Sales June Sale, he
was purchased for $180,000 out of the Eddie Woods consignment.
Following the Cougar II, longshot Irideo (Arg) pulled off a $65
surprise in the Wickerr at a mile on the turf course.
The Pozo de Luna Inc., homebred was ridden by Hector Berrios,
who last won a stakes at Del Mar in 2011 and is trained by Marcelo
Polanco, whose most recent stakes victory locally was in 2009.
Del Mar goes dark now until Thursday when racing resumes
with a 2 p.m. PDT (5 p.m. EDT) post.
BY BROCK SHERIDAN________________________________
Trainer Bob Baffert introduced his newest star at Del Mar Sunday
in Florida-bred Havnameltdown, an easy, two-and-a-
quarter-length winner of a five furlong maiden special
weight while topping a Florida-bred exacta with Mis-
ter Iceman, a son of Girvin, second.
In his first career start Sunday, Havnameltdown
and jockey Florent Geroux broke evenly from post
seven as Mister Iceman broke on top from post six.
But Havnameltdown sprinted to the front and had
a clear lead on Mister Iceman in second down the
backstretch before finishing the first quarter-mile
in :22.29 on the fast track.
Turning for home, Mister Iceman and Dillinger, the other Baffert
entry, tried to muster a challenge as they entered the stretch within a
length of
Havnameltdown but the latter was too much and pulled away
to a two-length lead in deep stretch before finishing in :57.42.
Havnameltdown paid $4.60 to win and the $1 Florida-bred ex-
acta returned $22.90.
Mister Iceman was a length-and-quarter
faster than Dillinger in third.
Havnameltdown is owned by Michael E. Pe-
gram, Karl Watson and Paul Wellman and
earned $48,000 for the victory.
Baffert purchased the son of Uncaptured at
the Ocala Breeders’ Spring Sale in April for
$200,000 in the name of Three Amigos from the
Blas Perez consignment after working an eighth-
mile in :9.80. Havnameltdown is out of Ashley’s
Babe, by Put It Back and was bred by Katherine
S. Devall. Ashley’s Babe is a half-sister to stakes winners Jay’s Way,
Who What Win and Ayoumilove and stakes-producer Jim’s
Lonessa, the dam of 2020 Selene (G3)-winner Two Sixty.
