BY THE JOCKEYS’ GUILD PRESS OFFICE _____________
LEXINGTON, KY—Tampa Bay Downs leading rider Samy Cama-
cho had a mount in every race on the track’s Festival Preview Day
last Saturday and his three wins that day included an upset victory
with Florida-bred Dreaming of Snow in the $150,000 Suncoast,
defeating recently crowned champion 2-year-old filly Wonder
Wheel. That notable accomplishment earned Camacho the honor
of Jockey of the Week for Feb. 6-12 by a panel of racing experts.
The award recognizes jockeys for riding accomplishments and
who are members of the Jockeys’ Guild, the organization which
represents more than 1,050 active, retired and permanently dis-
abled jockeys in the United States.
Camacho was aboard Dreaming of Snow in the Suncoast for
trainer Gerald Bennett. Also in the field of nine was Grade 2 Dem-
oiselle-winner Julia Shining. Even though she had won over the
Tampa Bay surface previously, Dreaming of Snow was dismissed
at odds of 38-1.
The Suncoast is a “Road to the Kentucky Oaks” points race,
with Dreaming of Snow earning 20 points on the Oaks Leader-
board for the May 5 premier event for 3-year-old fillies.
“I beat Wonder Wheel—Wow!” Camacho exclaimed. “I know
this filly well and when I got on her in the morning for the first
time, I told [Bennett] I have to stay on her. She’s pretty nice, but
I never thought she would run two turns like this. She came back
again when Wonder Wheel came to her.”
Camacho, 34, is a native of Venezuela and began riding in the
United States in 2012. He won his 1,000th career race at Mon-
mouth Park May 21, 2022. His younger brother, Samuel Camacho
Jr. is also a jockey. Camacho is currently on his way to winning his
fourth leading rider title at Tampa Bay with 57 wins, 22 more than
runner-up Pablo Morales.
Camacho’s competition for Jockey of the Week included
Armando Ayuso, who won the $101,350 El Camino Derby at Gold-
en Gate on Chase the Chaos; Javier Castellano, who led all riders
in wins for the week with 10; Manny Franco; who won the Grade 3
Withers with Hit Show, and Luis Saez who won the Grade 3
Sam F. Davis with Litigate.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis
Confirmed in St. Johns County
A new case of Eastern Equine
Encephalitis was confirmed in St.
Johns County, Fla., on Feb. 13
according to the Equine Disease
Communication Center and the
Florida Department of Agriculture
and Consumer Services. However,
no quarantine has been issued.
One 4-year-old miniature horse was confirmed with EEE in St.
Johns County and was euthanized after showing clinical signs on
Feb. 2 of lethargy, inappetence, dysphagia, incoordination and hind
limb weakness. The horse was under-vaccinated.
This is the second confirmed EEE case for Florida in 2023.
According to the Equine Disease Communication Center,
eastern equine encephalitis is a vector borne disease. This virus
is transmitted by mosquitoes or other biting insects. Birds act as
reservoirs for the virus; mosquitoes and other biting insects then
carry the pathogen from infected birds and transmit it to horses
when they bite. A horse affected with EEE is not contagious and
poses no risk to other horses, humans or birds.
The disease is severe with a mortality rate of 75% - 95% and the
onset of neurologic disease is frequently sudden and progressive.

LEXINGTON, KY—Keeneland announced it will hold the 2023
April Selected Horses of Racing Age Sale on Sunday, April 30
beginning at 4 p.m. EDT.
Entry deadline for the print version of the April Sale catalog is
Monday, April 3. Approved supplemental entries will be accepted
until the sale.
Keeneland successfully held its April Selected Sale last year
on closing day of the Spring Meet, and the sale will return to that
position on the calendar in 2024. This year’s move to Sunday is
a one-time event to avoid conflict with the Ocala Breeders’ Sales
Company’s Spring Sale.
“The April Selected Sale feeds off the energy and excitement of
the Spring Meet and gives horsemen a terrific opportunity to cash
in on or buy quality individuals, especially those who run well at
Keeneland, as they transition to summer racing,” Keeneland Vice
President of Sales Tony Lacy said. “While we feel closing day
remains the ideal position for the April Sale, the shift to Sunday
this year still allows us to properly showcase these horses before
attention moves to Louisville and Kentucky Derby Week. We look
forward to resuming the sale’s Spring Meet closing-day schedule
in 2024 and beyond.”
Alumni of the 2022 April Sale include 2023 John B. Connally
Turf Cup (Grade 3)-winner Scarlet Fusion and Astra-winner Duvet
Day (Ire) along with 2022 Nearctic (G2)-winner Cazadero and

PRESS OFFICE _____________________________________
GAINESVILLE, FL—Morriston resident Valerie Frederick still is
haunted by the loss of a beloved Friesian colt that succumbed to
colic several years ago. So when her second Friesian, a 20-year-old
stallion named Hannibal, began showing signs of the illness, she
knew she would do everything possible to save his life.
She brought Hannibal to the University of Florida Large Animal
Hospital on Jan. 13 where, after a team of specialists conducted
tests that included a gastroscopy and an abdominal ultrasound,
diagnosed a rare gastric impaction with severe chronic gastric dila-
tion—a condition in which feed material is trapped in the stomach,
leading to distention.
After a week of intensive medical management failed to empty
Hannibal’s stomach, Todd Holbrook, D.V.M, D.A.C.V.I.M., a clin-
ical professor in the UF College of Veterinary Medicine and one
of the equine medicine specialists who treated Hannibal, recom-
mended surgery.
He contacted his fellow faculty member, David Freeman,
M.V.B., Ph.D., D.A.C.V.S., a professor of equine surgery at UF
who holds the Appleton Endowed Professorship and is renowned
for his expertise in colic surgery, to discuss the case. On Jan. 27,
Freeman successfully operated to remove Hannibal’s impaction,
using a technique he developed at UF and has only used a handful
of times due to its difficulty.
“In my 30 years as an internist, in similar cases, I was not able
to offer surgical options,” Holbrook, who joined UF’s faculty in
2021, Freeman said.
The procedure took approximately four hours to complete.
“Unfortunately, there’s really no good medical treatment for this
condition,” Freeman said. “Relative to their size, horses have a
very small stomach. Because it’s so small, it is not easy to reach
during surgery. When the stomach is impacted, it’s very full and
heavy, and you can’t lift it out of the abdomen at all.”
The technique Freeman developed for this type of surgery
improves surgical access to the equine stomach and involves an
incision that goes over the stomach, under the diaphragm and ribs
and then curves forward, in a shape similar to the letter “J.”
“We have rarely used this procedure, but we did know going in
that we were going to do it,” Freeman said. “We recognized that it
was a gastric impaction, which is always difficult to treat surgical-
ly. Some would not attempt it.”
Fortunately, Hannibal recuperated well from the procedure. He
remained hospitalized as Holbrook and his team kept him stabilized.
“He was initially held off feed and given partial nutritional sup-
port intravenously for several days,” Holbrook said. “Subsequent-
ly, we began feeding a small amount of a complete feed mixed
with water to a slurry consistency and over the next week, we
gradually increased the feeding frequency from every four hours
to every two hours while simultaneously gradually increasing his
intake toward his caloric needs and eventually weaning him off of
IV nutrition.”
He was discharged from the hospital on Feb. 1. For the rest of
his life, Hannibal will be fed only this complete pelleted ration,
with no hay or grazing, Holbrook said. A slow feeder will provide
Hannibal’s complete pelleted feed in small volumes frequently
around the clock, with additional slurry mashes fed two to three
times a day. After his surgical site heals, he can be turned out of
his stall for exercise.
“He’ll be able to come and go with a muzzle on to walk around

Showcase Properties of Central Florida offers a Morriston,
Fla., equine training-breeding-boarding facilities for sale
in the Horse Capital of the World.
7787 NW 150th Avenue in Morriston, offered at $2.5 million,
includes just under 50 acres of rolling countryside. This farm in
Ocala horse country, sits only four miles to HITS and 14 miles to
the World Equestrian Center.
The gated farm entrance and paved driveway past several
paddocks leads into the main space of the property. With con-
crete construction to ensure durability, the 10-stall barn includes
an upstairs apartment/office space with balcony, plus a wash
rack with hot water. Located near the barn is a roundpen and a
newly updated equine pool complete with a wood walkway and
fountain feature.
The farm offers a total of nine three-board fenced paddocks
with feed stations, dotted with shadetrees.
Also on property is a three bay concrete block maintenance area

and won’t be able to graze—though I’m sure he’ll try,” said Fred-
erick, who described Hannibal as her “absolute joy.”
The Friesian breed is popular in Europe and the United States as
a riding horse because of its pleasant disposition, its uniformly black
coat, large size, thick mane and tail, and statuesque appearance.
Before surgery was performed, Frederick had read up on Free-
man’s expertise, and said she initially was “just a wreck,” hoping
things would go well.
“I kind of knew in my heart that everything would be okay. But
when they finished the surgery and said it went well, things just kept
going better and better,” Frederick said. “I told the doctors there, do
what you have to do to save him,” Frederick said. “And they did.”
As board-certified veterinary specialists in internal medicine
and surgery, respectively, both Holbrook and Freeman have com-
pleted additional training in their specific areas of veterinary med-
icine and have passed an examination in their chosen specialty.

pacesetter and was up and clear late. PINK PARTY PANTS set the pace in the two path, drifted into the five path in upper stretch
and led until deep stretch. WICKED ICE chased the pace three wide, was no match for the top two but was along late for the show.
PARDON MOI raced in range three wide and lacked the needed rally. LEAD PERFORMER stalked the pace from the rail and faded
in the lane. BODIL saved ground and failed to menace. VALIANT SHI SHI played no factor while racing two wide. JAZZY JAS made
little impact while racing four wide. SHE'S RED HOT trailed inside.

JOURNEYMAN trailed in the two path, was roused along the inside around the far turn, waited for room passing the quarter
pole, and found an opening in the four path at the top of the lane, and rallied to get up in the final sixteenth. TAPSASIONAL set
the pace in the two path, was coaxed along the inside nearing the quarter pole and cued right handed in the three path entering
the stretch, and ran on but was caught by an outer foe in the final sixteenth to place. DOMINATE THEMOMENT prompted the
pace along the inside early, was roused along the rail turning into the stretch, tipped out to the three path passing the eighth pole,
but evened out for show. GRAPE NUTS WARRIOR was reserved along the inside early, bumped out an outer foe midway down the
backstretch and was ridden in the five path around the far turn and into the lane, but was one paced. MALIBU UPROAR raced in
midpack in the three path, was driven between rivals around the far turn and in six path going into the stretch, but was no factor.
CHARLIE G was hard held while up close in the four path but faded in upper stretch. UNIVERSAL PAYDAY rated in the three path,
got bumped out by an inner foe midway down the backstretch and was asked while losing ground in the six path around the far turn,
and failed to threaten. MORNING STRIDE settled in range in the five path down the backstretch, was ridden in the four path around
the far turn, yielded from the five path in the stretch, was eased around the eighth pole, pulled up just past the wire, and vanned off.
